Why Insure?
There is often a degree of confusion amongst shippers/consignees regarding the "insurance cover" provide by a Forwarder's Liability Policy and frequently, either through ignorance or a desire to save money on insurance premiums, they will rely on this cover. However, a Liability Policy will only cover the Forwarder's legal liability for loss, damage or delay to goods in transit and the amount will therefore vary according to the Conditions or Convention applicable when the loss, damage or delay occurred.
Cargo Insurance
Cargo Insurance will provide the Owner with cover for loss or damage occurring to his own goods. Unless otherwise arranged, goods will be covered for "All Risks" in accordance with Institute cargo Clauses A together with some War and Strike Risks, Salvage Charges, General Average and Sue and Labour Charges. Note however the "delay" is not covered. The normal insured value is CIF + 10% (i.e. the invoice value + freight charge + insurance premium plus 10%).
