Air cargo capacity set to increase

Date Added: 2 November 2021

With a strong presence in the expedited airfreight business through our subsidiary, Davies Turner Air Cargo, we note reports in the international media that global air cargo capacity is set to increase as airlines deploy more flights to meet a jump in demand for Transatlantic travel.

During recent earnings calls, airline bosses reported that they have seen a jump in passenger demand once the USA announced that it would allow fully vaccinated foreign visitors into the country from November 8th

We have seen Delta Air Lines adding flights to its winter schedule following a surge in November and December bookings from Europe, which was mirrored by American Airlines and United Airlines especially on Transatlantic routes.

Over the last 18 months the air freight market has lost a significant amount of capacity as passenger airlines, which carry cargo in the bellyholds of their aircraft, reduced the number of flights they operate, leading to spikes in air shipping rates.

Whilst it remains a long journey to recovery for passenger travel, any additional capacity will be welcomed by shippers, many of which are opting to move more freight via air ahead of peak season to avoid ocean congestion.

2022 could bring further relief for shippers, with several airline executives saying that they are optimistic that  more capacity will be added next year, with United Airlines saying that it expects its Latin America and Transatlantic bookings will gradually build to 2019 levels and above by summer 2022, and we understand it will be adding 10 new Transatlantic routes next year.
