Ever Given returns to service

Date Added: 17 November 2021

As a provider of global ocean freight forwarding services, Davies Turner has watched the recovery and repair of the ship that closed the Suez Canal for six days this year - Evergreen Marine’s 20,124 teu Ever Given.

The stricken box ship hit the headlines when, at 07:40 Eastern European Time (UTC+02:00) on 23 March 2021, it was grounded in the canal, causing a blockage that stopped many other ships that were then stranded in the canal.

The Ever Given is now up and sailing some eight months since it ran aground. This is good news for Davies Turner’s global supply chain activities.

Ever Given has now loaded around 5,000 containers at Qingdao port before steaming to other Chinese ports followed by a stop in Malaysia before it sets sail for Europe.

After crunching her bow as she ploughed into the eastern banks of the Suez Canal, she was moved to Qingdao Beihai shipyard which undertook extensive repair work that took around six months. This work was so major that it took double the planned time in the ship yard.

Now boasting a new and freshly repainted bulbous bow, the container ship has re-entered the shipping world to play its part in the global supply chain again.
