Strike Action at the Ports of Felixstowe & Liverpool

FELIXSTOWE

Following our notification last week of a planned strike at the Port of Felixstowe, unfortunately, with no further talks having taken place strike action will commence on Sunday 21st August through to Monday 29th August. The initial strike is set for 8 days, but with no further talks planned, additional strike action is expected.

Shipping lines are continuing to assess options and put contingency plans in place, where possible vessels are docking at Felixstowe prior to the planned strike. We have put in place additional haulage capacity to collect containers from the dock in the lead up to Sunday 21st. During the initial strike period vessel diversions, use of alternative UK, European as well as Mediterranean ports are being arranged. We will continue to work closely with the lines and should UK vessel omissions occur, we will initiate continental haulage through our network, to provide clients with the fastest and most cost effective options available.

We have put systems in place to continuously review all impacted vessels and will keep any affected clients fully up-dated.

LIVERPOOL
In addition to the pending Felixstowe port strike, we have now received confirmation that Liverpool Dockers have voted to strike over pay. If a pay agreement can’t be reached, strike action at Liverpool could commence in mid-September.

CONGESTION AT EUROPEAN PORTS
Unfortunately, the congestion being experienced at European ports is ongoing as the German port strikes continue, this will exacerbate the situation for the UK should the planned UK port strikes go ahead.

IMPACT OF UK PORT STRIKES
The impact of the UK port strikes on supply chains will, if they go ahead, be significant. It will cause severe disruption to international maritime trade, as well as the UK’s logistics and haulage sectors. Schedule reliability, equipment shortages, port congestion and haulage will all be adversely impacted and additional costs will be incurred.
