Suez Canal blocked

Date Added: 25 March 2021

LARGE CONTAINER VESSEL BLOCKS THE SUEZ CANAL
The 400m long Ever Given has been making headline news since Tuesday after getting stuck sideways in the Suez Canal, effectively blocking the way for other vessels, creating long tailbacks.

The Suez Canal connects Asia and Europe, providing the fastest navigation passage, with approximately 19,000 vessels per year passing through it. Any closure of this route can have major ramifications for trade.

The latest news from Bloomberg, is that the ship may need to wait until the Spring tide on Monday when there will be a few more inches of water to re-float it.

WILL THIS AFFECT MY FREIGHT?
There are numerous freight vessels being impacted by the blockage, causing significant delays to their schedules.

Below is a list of freight vessels stuck in the canal. This list is not exhaustive, but is based on information collated to date.

Davies Turner ocean teams will be contacting clients as further up-dates are received from the shipping lines.

MAERSK DENVER MSC ROMA EVER GLOBE
MAERSK SAIGON ONE CRANE EVER EXCEL

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
A lot depends on how quickly the Ever Given can be refloated, but shipping lines will be looking at their options.

Vessels not stuck in the canal could be re-routed via the Cape of Good Hope, adding approximately 14 days to transit times, but this would prove costly. Alternatively, shipping lines may delay future departures in the hope that the blockage is cleared quickly.

REPERCUSSIONS OF THE SUEZ CANAL CLOSURE
The after effect of this closure, particularly if lengthy, is likely to have grim consequences, adding to the issues that have affected ocean services over the last few months.

It is predicted that schedule reliability, equipment shortages, port congestion and haulage will all be impacted, resulting in further volatility of rates.
