The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)
In less than two weeks time, on the 15th of December, the UK will join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), potentially affecting imports and exports. Find out all the information about this new agreement below.
Countries involved in the new trade agreement
From the 15th of December, CPTPP will be applicable between the UK and the following countries:
- Japan
- Singapore
- Chile
- New Zealand
- Vietnam
- Peru
- Malaysia
- Brunei
From the 24th of December it will also apply to Australia and at a future date (not currently set) Canada and Mexico.
The CPTPP is a free trade agreement between the UK and the countries listed. It will reduce tariffs and other trade barriers, improving market access for UK businesses and promoting economic integration and cooperation.
Are all goods exempt from duties under CPTPP preference?
The majority of goods, around 99%, are duty-free under the CPTPP preference. Nevertheless, there may be some exceptions if other agreements are in place. For details on a particular Commodity Code, please refer to the HMRC Online Tariff.
How can preference be claimed?
The CPTPP does not have a specific Preference Statement for claiming preference, unlike other trade agreements. Instead, preference can be claimed by following a set of documentary requirements.
A self-certify form has been made available for Exporters, Importers or Producers of goods to certify preference eligibility. It contains all necessary information and can be used instead of having the same information on Commercial Documents.
Is the certification document required for preference claims?
The preference claims do not need the certification document, but all the information including the complete statement and signature is required. The document can serve as a checklist if needed.
