US Dockworkers Strike Recovery
We are pleased to advise that the strike by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) came to an end after just three days.
The strike caused ocean shipping to shut down at ports on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, including those in New York and New Jersey. However, a tentative deal has been reached with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which has resulted in the end of the strike.
Impact of strike action
Ports: There is a backlog of cargo at the ports resulting from the strike action, and it is expected that it will take a week for port operations to clear this. However, some ports are now also being impacted by the recent hurricanes in Florida, which are adding to the disruption and causing further delays.
Carriers: Since the strike ended, shipping lines are trying to get schedules back on track. To do this, port omissions and delays are likely for the next three weeks.
US Haulage: Internal movements within the US are facing delays at ports, rail ramps, and container yards while the residual port congestion is handled.
Disruption surcharge cancelled
The fallout from the strike for ocean freight services has been minimal, thanks in part to the proactive planning of supply chain operators who moved goods in and out of the ports early. As a result, delays to ocean freight have not been as significant as anticipated.
In light of this, carriers have confirmed the cancellation of the disruption surcharge. We are happy to inform you that Davies Turner has also cancelled the LCL disruption surcharge that was scheduled to take effect from 20/10/24 for both US export and import ocean freight movements
