Maritime risks in Red Sea as ships are attacked With our comprehensive portfolio of international container shipping services, many of which transit the Suez Canal and Red Sea, Davies Turner is mindful that the risks to container ships in the Red Sea region have been further heightened after reports that an OOCL ship was attacked by a Houthi drone at the weekend. According to reports, the ship issued a distress call after reporting being hit by a rocket as it sailed some 40 km from the Yemen coast, resulting in engine damage and the ship taking on water. Splash247 reported that Houthi rebels subsequently ordered the vessel to dock at the port of Hodeidah, where the captured car-carrier Galaxy Leader is being held. The latest attack shows how the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East Gulf and Red Sea region is beginning to hit container supply chains, which underpin global trade, with some lines withdrawing vessels from operating in the area or diverting the routings of their services. The alternative route to the Suez Canal involves rounding the Cape of Good Hope, near Cape Town, and sailing along western Africa, a far lengthier and costlier route. Shipowners are also already having to pay more for insurance, as well as investing in additional security measures. “These attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security,” the U.S. military’s Central Command said in a statement.
